As you enter the Fall season, how will you create and maintain your health and wellness goals? My name is Jill Veith, I am a Certified Health and Wellness Coach, specializing in behavior and lifestyle change. As the daylight recedes and schedules ramp up for the holidays, we know the difficult toll the seasonal changes can have on our bodies in the form of a few extra pounds, and to our minds with loss of motivation.
One of the motivational tools I use with clients is to picture what they want to be true in their future and write it in the form of a personal vision statement. This Fall, don’t let your healthy behaviors fall off your busy calendar. Harness that back-to-school energy and design a wellness vision for yourself. You can use your vision for motivation as you prioritize health and wellness into the New Year.
Many people have written a vision or mission statement for a job or business, although most have not given the same attention to their personal lives. When you make your personal vision a priority, you get clarity and control on the outcome you desire. Your vision provides important motivation and purpose to your future destination.
How can you design your own wellness vision? Set aside time to become really clear on what you want to be happening in all aspects of your life. It is helpful to make a list of what values you want to align with and what motivators you have for prioritizing your health. Keep in mind a wellness vision is a compelling statement that describes your desired future self.
Here are few points to keep in mind while creating your vision:
- describe what you want vs. what you do not want
- describe what you are doing, thinking, and feeling in your healthy future body and mind
- make it bold, energizing, inspiring, and positive
- stretch your current idea of what is possible
Here is my wellness vision as an example:
I am living my best life, feeling fit and energized, with time for it all. Professionally, I am coaching clients to envision and pursue their best life. Personally, I am focused on increasing my health span with a holistic and healthy lifestyle including mindfulness practice, daily activity, healthy eating, positive connection with my husband, family, and friends, finding adventure and learning through traveling, reading, and creative projects.
