A year ago this week I walked into ZenRock fitness and met with my incredible trainer, Nova, for the first time. I told her I was so frustrated because my back hurt constantly and that every time I tried to workout I ended up hurting myself and quitting. I couldn’t sleep without meds and my depression was getting worse.
I don’t have some crazy before and after picture for you because honestly, I don’t look very different. (What can I say, I love beer and cheese?) And, weight loss was not my goal. Really, though, what I’ve gained is so much more important:
- A love of movement and core strength- I started out at 5 minutes per day on a recumbent stationary bike and one personal training session per week. I added a minute on that bike every week for 15 weeks! I’m now at 20 minutes on a Cybex Arc Trainer (similar to an elliptical) most days, two personal training sessions a week and lots of other fun movement at home. My favorite is my yoga stand that supports my headstands. The first day I popped up into a headstand I about cried! My name is Pamela and I enjoy working out. Never thought I would say this in a million years.
- Self-confidence – I don’t hate myself anymore. I don’t hate the way I look. I actually love myself. I started following body positive people on social media and came across a local photographer who was doing a model call for all sizes for boudoir photos. I actually did it. And, you know what? I saw for the first time in a VERY long time what my husband sees. I’m kind of cute for a fluffy 44-year-old. Travis (my hubby) said… I told you. My scale now rests under the dresser and is used for weighing luggage before flights.
- A healthy relationship with food – I began exploring intuitive eating. I no longer diet. I do try to eat at least four cups of veggies a day. I do drink a ton of water. BUT – our minds are kind of crazy and since I no longer restrict myself, I personally find that my body tells me what it wants and needs. It tells me when I’m hungry and it tells me when I’m full. (I actually don’t crave a ton of sugar.)
- Non-medicated and fabulous sleep – This has been a combined effort between a new mattress and exercise. WOW! I no longer dread going to bed. I fall asleep quickly, wake up refreshed and don’t ache. I do still (and will always) take my anti-depressant.
Thank you, Nova, for helping me get my life back. I feel like I’ve made a friend for life. Thank you to you and all of the trainers for making ZenRock and welcoming and positive space.
